The 2020 base-building meta, explained
Town Hall 13, Super Troops, Scattershots, and defensive Town Halls changed what a strong village needed to do.
01
Why this archive stops at Town Hall 13
Top COC Bases was active in 2020, when Town Hall 13 was the endgame level. The level had arrived with the Royal Champion, Scattershot, Siege Barracks, and a Giga Inferno whose destruction effect slowed nearby units. That is the historical ruleset behind this collection.
This archive does not pretend a 2020 layout is automatically competitive in the current game. It preserves how builders reasoned at the time and clearly labels old copy links that may no longer work.
02
Town Hall 13 made the core more dangerous
The Giga Inferno turned the Town Hall itself into a major defensive zone. A compact core could create heavy damage, but packing every premium defense beside it also handed attackers excellent spell value. Strong layouts used distance and separate compartments to make the Town Hall and Scattershots distinct problems.
The Royal Champion added another defense-targeting hero to attack planning. Builders had to think about how quickly a route could chain through defenses and whether walls, storages, and awkward angles could interrupt that sequence.
03
Super Troops widened the attack menu
The Spring 2020 update introduced Super Troops for villages at Town Hall 11 and above. A layout that only considered one familiar army became easier to solve. Wider compartments, less predictable trap placement, and better protected entry points grew more valuable.
The lesson was not to counter every troop individually. It was to avoid giving any one attack a clean, repeatable route through all of the important structures.
04
What still transfers to modern play
Specific balance numbers change, but the durable ideas remain useful: deny straight-line value, separate objectives, create overlapping coverage, test with replays, and move traps after patterns emerge. Read these layouts as case studies in those principles.
- Historical snapshot: useful for learning and nostalgia.
- Not a promise of performance in the current live game.
- Original archive links are preserved only when they were recoverable.
